Wimpy Kid Event

 Over forty students and one teacher attended the Wimpy Kid Event.

 We were celebrating the releash of the latest Wimpy Kid book--The Ugly Truth.

 The decorations and the door prizes were quite wimpy.

 But a good time was had by all.

These are only the seventh graders. The sixth graders filled up the tables and took two days.

Panthers Chew On Books--Wimpy Kid Event

The next Panthers Chew On Books will be held on November 12.  Students who attend will discuss the Wimpy Kid books, enjoy a sweet treat, and have the chance to win some very wimpy door prizes.  Applications are due by Friday, November 5th.  Attendance is limited to 20 students per lunch shift.

The Book Fair is Over

Hazelwood North's Book Fair ended Monday, Oct. 18, 2010.  Over $3000 worth of books were sold.  Over 200 books were provided to classrooms for classroom libraries.  The library also added many books from the book fair.

The book fair was a success.  Look for the Return of the Book Fair at the spring Parent Teacher Conferences.

The Scholastic Book Fair is in full swing during Parent Teacher conferences.

Book Battle Club

The Book Battle Club is working on reading those twenty books.

 Lots of students have joined the Book Battle this year.

 Many of the books on this year's list are fun to read.

 The hour goes by quickly.

It is hard to stop reading when it is time to go home.

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic BookFair will begin on October 7, 2010.  Students are scheduled to come to the Book Fair in their Communication Skills classes.  Additionally, the Book Fair will be open during Parent Teacher Conferences.  The Book Fair will close on Monday, October 18, 2010.

Avi

The Area Wide Book Battle Committee has announced that the author Avi will be at the Book Battle in May.  Avi has written many exciting books for students in the middle grades.  He is the author of the Book Battle selection Seer of Shadows.  Scholastic Books is sponsoring Avi to be at the Book Battle.

Book Battle News

The Area Wide Book Battle Committee has a blog that can be reached here.  They are sponsoring some author interviews to go along with the books on the Book Battle list. The committee is encouraging students to comment on the author's interview.  This week the interview is with Peg Kehret.  This website will also be used to offer practice questions for the Book Battle this year.

Panthers Chew on Books--Hunger Games

Friday at the library was the place to be for fans of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

 It was clear that jabber jays were not invited.

 The mutts needed to stay home.  Many of the attendees agreed that the mutts were some of the creepiest characters ever.

 Tracker jackers weren't invited.  That was a good thing because we didn't have the anti-venom.

 The golden parachutes delivered some delicious treats.

 The sixth grade attendees included 2 teachers who were Hunger Games fans.

 Seventh graders really loved the book and several had read the entire series.

Eighth graders were working through the trilogy and had some questions about the end that couldn't be answered until they finished the series.

The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of books set in the future.  After a war that had largely destroyed the continent, the victors held an event called the hunger games in which children from the losing districts battled to their deaths to be that last one standing.  The events of the games and the development of a resistance to such treatment among the districts is the central storyline of the trilogy.  There is great character development including friendships, romance, and enemies.  Overall, every Panther who attended loved the Hunger Games.

Hunger Games--Friday

Panther's Chew On Books will hold the first event for this year on Friday, September 24, 2010.  Students interested in discussing The Hunger Games are invited to lunch in the library with a treat.

At the event we will discuss the Hunger Games and meet other readers who enjoyed the Hunger Games.

First Book Battle Meeting

Twenty students attended the first meeting of the Book Battle Club after school Thursday.  Everyone was enthusiastic about the books selected for the Book Battle this year.  Every one of the books had been read by someone in attendance except for the book Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. 

Hunger Games and Stolen Children had been read by the most people.  Everyone agreed that reading during club time is something they looked forward to next week.  The Book Battle Club has lots of great readers this year!

Don't Forget, Book Battle Starts Thursday!

The first meeting of the Book Battle Club will be held after school, September 16, 2010.  Applications should be in before that date.  The list of books looks exciting this year.

Panthers Chew On Books

Panthers Chew On Books is the title for special events that will be held in the library several times a year.  Students will apply to come during their lunch shift to eat in the library and discuss a particular book or books by an author.

The first Panthers Chew On Books event will be held Sept. 24 in the library.  At this event we will discuss the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  Applications will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 20, 2011.  Stop by the library and pick one up if you loved the Hunger Games.

Book Battle Begins

The North Book Battle Club will hold the first meeting of the school year on Sept. 16, 2010 after school in the library.  Interested students should pick up an application in the library.  Book Battle will meet on Thursdays after school. 

At the club students will read the 20 books from the Area Wide Book Battle list.  Students will develop summaries, write and take quizzes, and discuss these books.  The top 8 students will attend the Area Wide Book Battle in May during the school day.  The selected students will represent Hazelwood North Middle.

A blog containing the list of the Book Battle Books is called "Eating YA Books."  This blog is managed by Pattonville Heights Middle School librarians.
